Working with Llanarth Primary School

As part of Llanarth WI's involvement in the local community, we joined with Llanarth Community Primary School to teach some of the pupils how to knit and assist them to create items to be put forward to local and national competitions in Wales. This has been very rewarding not only for the school and it's pupils but also for our members who have been going to the school in their own time to pass on their knitting skills to the children. We've been involved in this community work since 2011.

2011

Margaret Vobe and Dianne Smith were the two members that went to Llanarth school in 2011 to teach some of the children to knit. Several of the children knitted a scene of mountain and stream, which was mounted on a slate then the border around the knitting was decorated. These were done for a craft competition at the Royal Welsh Show at Llanelwedd. Sadly the children didn't win a prize.

2012

In 2012 two pupils entered the Urdd Eisteddfod craft competition. The subject was 'Celebration' and as the Urdd was celebrating it's 90th year, we helped the pupils knit a birthday card to Mr. Urdd and also knit a Mr. Urdd as an egg sitting in an egg cup. In the county heat of the Urdd Eisteddfod, the card won first prize and the egg won second prize. Sadly we didn't have any success at the National Urdd Eisteddfod.

2013

This year we've been teaching some of the children to knit so they can create items to be entered into the Urdd Eisteddfod craft competition. The theme this year was design in the environment. In the one age group, a pupil covered an ornamental metal tree in knitting and added flowers, leaves, toadstool and acorns. In another age group a second pupil
knitted flowers attached to a knitted scene to represent the Welsh song 'Ar lan y Mor'. At the county heat the knitted tree won first prize and the song scene won second prize. The tree will now go forward to the National Urdd Eisteddfod which will be judged in a few weeks time - fingers crossed for success this time.
